Mt. Carl Heller - 13,235 ft.

Sat. Aug 1 (6a start)

RT Distance: 11 miles

Elev. Gain: 6,900 ft.

Mt Carl Heller is an officially named peak that stands above George Creek in Inyo National Forest. This peak's east arete has the reputation of having one of the best class 3/4 scrambles in the entire Sierra, and the approach has the reputation of having one of the best bushwhacks to boot. From George Creek "Trailhead", hike up the rugged canyon. My one piece of advice is to stay as close to the creek as possible. Do not try to scramble up and around things, and look to cross frequently. At around 8,800 feet, follow the fork that descends from the south all the way to a large unnamed tarn. Gain the east arete and follow this to the summit.

The safest way to descend may be off the southwest slopes. Drop down to Wallace Lake then climb back up and over Vacation Pass. One may alternatively climb over via Cleaver Col and exit via Whitney Portal.

Other Challenge peaks in this area include Barnard East or Tunnabora Peak. Bonus peaks might include Mt Barnard, Trojan Peak, Vacation Peak, among many others.

6am start from George Creek.
